The rain was pounding on the roof of the car in thunderous crashes and
the wipers failed to push the cascading water off the windshield. Allen put the
gear shift into reverse and started to back his small car out of the space in the
parking lot. It was always a delicate procedure to make a maneuver like this. Not
that it was unusual in any way but rather that his small car – an economy car
from a different era – was long past its prime and didn’t like wet weather or going
in reverse.
